COURSE FOCUSWe will specifically focus on the genetic status of the Bernese Mountain Dog, both through history and currently.
We will explore data from both pedigree and DNA studies to learn about inbreeding, relatedness and kinship, heterozygosity, genetic disorders, and variation within the breed (e.g., field vs show). We will cover the health issues of the breed and what breeders can do to reduce the risk of genetic disorders in the dogs they breed. We will learn to use the DogsArk breeder tool, which provides the most advanced and comprehensive information available today about the genetics of dog breeds. Students will be able to submit data for their own dogs from Embark to be included in the DogsArk Breeder Tool.
