HETEROZYGOSITY
EU Breeds with
Muzzle Length Restrictions
EU BREEDING RESTRICTIONS
5 June 2025 - The EU has passed significant new legislation regarding dog breeding. The policies of interest here affect brachycephalic breeds, which must now have a muzzle of adequate length relative to the muzzle.
For the benefit of breeders that will be trying to meet these new standards, I have pulled together here the data for heterozygosity for all breeds published in the paper by Donner et al (2018) for the affected breeds. In some cases, there is variation in a breed that might be useful for selection, and that could be evident in these charts. To complement this information, I have also indicated the how much information is available from the Donner study for populations by country so breeders can find other subpopulations of dogs.
