POPULATION GENETIC ANALYSIS OF A PEDIGREE DATABASE
Description-
Using the pedigree database of a purebred dog breed back to founders, we will go through the steps of a population genetic analysis. We will explore the effects of historical events, breeding patterns, and bottlenecks on the genetics of the breed. We will analyze the current genetic status of the breed and consider the steps that can be taken to reduce the incidence of genetic disease and improve the health of the gene pool. We will be using the database compiled by breeders for the Chinook Project.
Who is it for? -
This course is for Chinook breeders, owners, and all who love the breed, but it is also highly recommended for anyone considering doing a population genetic analysis of their own breed. The Basic Population Genetics course would be useful as a prerequisite but not essential for students willing to do a bit of extra reading.
Schedule -
The course will convene for the first time on 16 December, when students will be provided background reading materials that they can read at their leisure over the Holidays. We will begin working with data on 6 January. The course is expected to last about 8 weeks, but will continue as necessary until the pedigree database analysis is complete.
Fee - $95
