RESEARCH STUDY
Aging & Lifespan in Dogs
Eligibility
All dogs, purebreed (registration not necessary) and mixed breed*
For each dog, we will be collecting basic information: name, registration if purebred, date of birth, height and weight, known genetic disorders, past and current health issues, and we will be following up with the owner yearly for updated information and date of death. Owners will also have the opportunity to fill out a survey with more detailed information.

We especially want:
- Old dogs
- Rare breeds, including breeds not recognized by a kennel club
- Working dogs (livestock guardians, herding, farm and ranch dogs, etc)
Results provided to owner
- Genetic Diversity (heterozygosity)
- mtDNA haplotype
- Y chromosome haplotype
- Known mutations (list will be available soon)
- Genetic profile (suitable for identification and parentage verification)
How else could the data be used?
The DNA analysis will be performed on the highest resolution research platform available today. That means that the raw data will be suitable for use in future research studies with your consent, for example if a new genetic disorder appears in your breed. You should never need to collect additional DNA samples on a tested dog.
The DNA data can be added to the breed database for the ICB breeder tool (no charge). This will allow comparison of relatedness between dogs, breeding compatibility, and predicted traits and diversity of offspring.

When will you receive data?
Because the DNA is being collected for a research project and not a DNA test service, it could be several months before data are available. Note that because we are interested in the lifespans of the dogs, the data will only become useful for this purpose when we have a date of death.

* Our analysis will not include breed composition of mixed breed dogs.
