Scott & Fuller's 1965 Study of Genetics and Behavior
by Carol Beuchat PhD

Data from -
  • Scott JP & JL Fuller 1965 Genetics and the Social Behavior of the Dog.  Univ of Chicago Press.

This is a massive experiment carried out over 13 years at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine in the 1950's and 1960's.  (Jackson Laboratory is now one of the largest producers of purpose-bred mice and rats for research in the world.)  Their purpose was to address the genetics of behavior, and they recorded details of dozens of experiments carried out on both purebred and cross-bred dogs from birth through development to a year or more.  The 450+ page book is an amazing treasure trove of information about learning, development, social behavior, and intelligence in dogs and the genetics and heritability of traits.

Puppy mortality - purebred vs hybrid crosses
These data are for puppy mortality of pure and mixed breed (Cocker x Basenji) litters during the first three weeks and after 1 year ("total mortality").  Refer to their text for more information about these experiments.
