Frequency of Genetic Disorders:
Not related to breed standard
by Carol Beuchat PhD

Data from -
  • Summers JF, G Diesel, L Asher, PD McGreevy & LM Collins  2011 Inherited defects in pedigree dogs.  Part 2: Disorders that are not related to breed standards.  Vet J 183: 39-45.

Frequency of disorders among the 50 most popular breeds in the UK in 2007
Picture

Classification of disorders:
  • "Genetic" - disorders that are inherited diseases with no link to conformation (= "D" in Summers et al)
  • "Total" - disorders resulting from selection for a conformation trait, or exacerbated by a conformation trait (= "C + CD" in Summers et al), plus "genetic" (i.e., C + CD + D).

Genetic Illness Severity Index for Dogs:
  • Based on evaluation of 4 aspects of each disorder (prognosis, treatment, complications, and behavior), with severity for each ranging from 0 to 4. Total score for a disorder can range from 0 (least severe) to 16 (most severe).  Cumulative GISID score is the sum of all of the total scores for each disorder.  (pdf)
